Mxolisi “Emmex” Nkomonde is a contemporary dancer and dance instructor from Durban, South Africa. His unique dance style combines impeccable technique with a soulful and engaging energy.
As a performer, he embodies versatility and gives to his craft wholly. As an instructor, his mindful and technical approach leads and inspires students not only to learn dance, but to spiritual wellness, physical health, and awareness of mind and body.
Mxolisi Nkomonde trained at the Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre between 2005 and 2008 and continues to work as a performer and dance instructor. He has performed throughout South Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the United States. Major performances, under the direction of Jay Pather include: Firebird on tour in the United States with Janni Younge Productions (2016), Body of Evidence at the Big 5 Festival in The Hague, Netherlands (2010) From Before performed at the Spier Festival of White Lights (2010), and Blind Spot at the Metropolis Biennale, Copenhagen (2009).
He was awarded Best Newcomer (DanceLink) 2005 and was nominated for best male dancer of the year (DanceLink) in 2009. Mxolisi was commissioned by the Spier Contemporary Arts Festival to perform his original choreographic works Faces (2016) and Itches (2010). Also in 2010, his choreographic work Chosen was part of the Red Eye Jomba festival in Durban and he later performed Chosen (extended), a multimedia Dance video collaboration with videographer Dominique Jossie. Mxolisi choreographed the multimedia UCT masters production Passages (2010) directed by Sue Kiel.
